What we love
This incredible hotel totally lives up to its iconic reputation and 'premier address'. The slickest service and best attention to detail in the Caribbean belies an intimate, friendly and uber laid back vibe on a beautiful stretch of beach.
Setting the scene
Sandy Lane must be one of the most sought after addresses in the Caribbean. With a perfect golden beach as a front garden and a deceptively intimate setting, this fabulous hotel is peaceful, private and welcoming. Although such a romantic setting is perfect for couples, Sandy Lane is actually also one of the best family-friendly hotels that we have ever visited, but it manages to combine the two beautifully. Yes, somewhere that has its own Rolls Royce Phantom on-hand for airport transfers may deserve its exclusive reputation, but this lovely hotel should not be misunderstood, as it's actually incredibly inclusive, with a warmth and professionalism that many other hotels should try to emulate more. The number of guests who return here time and time again is testament to the beguiling atmosphere here, and we feel Sandy Lane truly deserves its reputation as a world-famous hotel.
There are 112 sea view rooms, suites, penthouses and villas here, but clever architecture and landscaping makes it feel much less. You are never far from the sea, but the beautiful gardens create peace and privacy. The rooms are supremely classic, comfortable and really do feel like a home from home. The unique villa sits centrally within the hotel and is the epitome of luxury and privacy, but we especially love the spacious penthouse, with exceptional sea views and a really unique position within the hotel. Whatever your room, the facilities in each are fantastic - we stayed a few days but would happily have stayed a few weeks in such comfort and style.
For a relatively small hotel, Sandy Lane provides a fantastic variety of dining options - and surely is some of the best food in the Caribbean. Beachfront L'Acajou provides European cuisine of exceptional quality, whilst Bajan Blue on the lower terrace offer more informal all-day dining - as well as an unmissably elaborate Sunday Brunch. The Spa Cafe and Sunday Brunch are equally worth visiting - we were hugely impressed by the food, wine and general choice and service here at every meal. Eating breakfast on the beach was an unforgettable Barbados experience for us.
Where to start?! Tee off on any of the hotel's world renowned golf courses - The Tom Fazio-designed Country Club course, the par 36 'Old Nine' or the infamous Green Monkey. The Club House facilities are truly impressive. The Sandy Lane spa (including gym) is also exceptional (we especially love the pool there) - we enjoyed one of the best massages that we have ever had here - another truly world-class facility in this hotel. and enjoy a grand reputation. The tennis facilities are also incredible, with 9 floodlit professional courts and a resident pro. The Beach Club offers every water sport you can imagine, and can also arrange diving and game fishing. However, it was those signature pink beach sun-loungers, complete with friendly beach service that caught our attention!
The Tree-house club is truly brilliant - we were beyond impressed. Such a great facility for both younger and older children and teenagers - even the children who think they're not interested by kids clubs get drawn in. Lifelong friendships are made here, and the staff are wonderful. It's safe to say that the children who spend time here are doing so out of choice - the specially designed programme even leaves adults green with envy! In addition, this facility is complimentary to all guests.
It is just a 40 minute drive from Grantley Adams International Airport.
