What we love
A new kid on the block, this hotel is set to cause a storm on the Amalfi Coast. Striking the perfect balance of seclusion without solitude, we love the sense of belonging that this hotel nurtures. As we sat playing a game of chess, sipping our martini in their library bar, we had to fight hard to remind ourselves that, alas, this wasn't our actual home!
Setting the scene
A newcomer to the Amalfi Coast's collection of luxury hotels, Monastero Santa Rosa is a stunning and welcome addition that is sure to set tongues wagging.
Set over four levels of pristinely landscaped gardens cascading down to the sea, this 17th century monastery stands proudly in a commanding position on the hilltop promontory of Conca dei Marini. Following an extensive renovation, Monastero Santa Rosa welcomes guests to her 20 rooms and suites - each named after a herb once grown by the nuns who made medicines here - in a typically Italian fashion: warm and cosseting. Whether you're searching for a romantic hideaway or a place to gather with friends and family, Monastero Santa Rosa will exceed all your expectations.
A world lost to the passage of history, each and every one of their 20 rooms and suites is committed to re-discovering the past. Charmingly named after the herbs that the nuns would have used in their medicine-making, the vaulted ceilings, timeless antiques and elegant Neapolitan furnishings exude an authentic Italian experience. The focus remains, however, on the views. The dazzling coast and Gulf of Salerno is too good to be ignored and so, of course, all rooms truly make the most of it with all the windows framing these picture perfect vistas. Each room & suite has their own balcony from which to take in the tranquillity of the area, just as the nuns would have done centuries ago. The suites vary in size but, like the rooms, they are all unique in their space and design. Many with elegant living and dining rooms as well as bougainvillea filled terraces; they are the perfect option for families. All are well equipped with en-suite bathrooms as well as Wi-Fi, A/C, ceiling fans, safe, flat screen TVs and enough original antiques to house a museum!
The culinary treats on offer are as much of a delicacy as the hotel itself. Ristorante Santa Rosa, their only restaurant, is procured under the watchful eye of Executive Chef Christoph Bob who's love and passion displayed in his dishes is summed up best by the man himself; married to a woman from the Amalfi Coast, Christoph tells us, "I not only fell in love with my wife, I fell in love with the destination and its food. Nowhere on earth does the sun and the soil give us such richness of flavours as do the fresh produce, herbs, and seafood found right here on our coast." His innovative Mediterranean dishes are a work of art, and truly embody his insatiable love affair with the region. Are you thinking life could not get much better than this? Well, think again and head down to the hotel's lower level to Bar Santa Rosa where awaits indoor & outdoor terraces beckoning you in with its panoramic views served best with a bellini or limoncello.
Catering for all travellers, the hotel not only offers something for everyone within its resplendent walls thereby ensuring you may never wish or need to leave them during your stay. But with its fantastic location along the Amalfi Coast, should you feel the need to explore, then you can easily do so with the Dolce Vita on your doorstep. Unlike most boutique hotels, their Spa here is more in keeping with what you would expect to find in a larger, city-based hotel. It's all too easy to while away a whole day with the abundance of treatments and experiences available in the original 17th century rustic walls that house their expansive Spa. Transport your mind, boy & soul back to the solitude and have of this sanctuary and delight in the award winning Santa Maria Novella products that will ensure the stresses and strains of home life are forgotten entirely. And to continue this state of relaxation, make for their glorious infinity pool that is sculptured into the cliff face and affords mind-boggling views over a seamlessly infinite expanse of brilliant blue water. Or for a complete escape, hunt down one of the several sun loungers dotted about the four levels of manicured gardens, each hidden away in seductive seclusion to enjoy the sunshine in utter privacy. For those of the more active nature, then the hotel offers a fully equipped gym. And the hotel concierge will be able to entice you with an action packed itinerary to truly showcase the bounty on offer on southern Italy's most supreme coast; golf, tennis, horse-riding, boat trips and cooking classes to name but a few. But the best way to explore is undoubtedly in a car, weaving and breathing the winding roads of the famed Amalfi Coastal Drive.
Whilst the hotel welcomes children, we would recommend that this boutique hotel is better suited for families with older children. Or for the ultimate retreat, perhaps seize the opportunity to have some quality time alone to fall in love with the surroundings and be together in Italy's most spectacular setting. You could always book a stay later down the line for that ultimate 21st celebration for the children, or perhaps celebrate their 'coming of age' in quite majestic style!
