South Africa

The destination

Cape Town is known as the most beautiful city in Africa and has earned plaudits from all around the world for its iconic scenery, vibrant atmosphere and famous history. Throughout years of development, the city has grown year on year and has become the forefront of South African tourism. As you arrive, you'll be taken back by the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain. Situated in the background, this impressive natural wonder resides over the city with a unique table cloth look due to the way clouds form on top of its flat surface. Scaling Table Mountain by foot or cable car rewards you with sensational views of the city, Robben Island, Lion's Head and the beautiful coastline.

Boasting a seafront position, sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean, the setting is just perfect. Enjoy a delightful meal out in the V&A waterfront where you'll have a huge range of dining options. For those who love their history, make sure you take a trip to Robben island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years before becoming President. As you cross over you may spot dolphins or whales depending on the season, and whilst on the island itself you can have fantastic views of Table Mountain and the city.

Cape Town is the perfect starting point for any South African itinerary and we know how much you’ll enjoy ticking off Table Mountain, Signal Hill, Lion's Head, the penguins at Boulders Beach, V&A Waterfront, Cape of Good Hope and Robben Island too. All of these are within striking distance of South Africa’s most perfectly positioned city. The minimal time difference from the UK (just 2 hours) means that you won’t suffer from jet lag and you can enjoy your trip from the start.

Cape Town has a wide variety of hotels to choose from, with a selection of our favourites listed below. However, this is just a sample, so please don't hesitate to give us a call on 01993 899 430, or email inspire@oxfordprivatetravel.com if you would like to find out more and we will be delighted to craft your own tailor-made trip.

Cape Town is a special place to experience culture, cuisine, scenery and so much more. We think it is perfectly catered to all types of travellers, whether on a honeymoon, traveling solo, as a family or part of a group.

South Africa has very distinct climatic zones meaning that weather can be very different at certain times of the year. For Cape Town the following is relevant:

January - March: Peak time, bigger crowds with the warmest temperature in the Cape.

April - May:  One of the best times to visit due to the small crowds and the great weather.

June - September: Colder temperatures in Cape Town and Garden Route with drizzly weather (whale watching season July-November).

October - December: The Cape begins to warm up and offers fantastic weather, perfect time to combine regions. Bear in mind December is one of the busiest months to visit and this books up extremely quickly.

A passport with at least six months validity is necessary as well as at least 2 blank pages when you present it at immigration. A visa is not required for stays up to 90 days.
