What we love

Cherry blossom, temples and shrines, hot springs, bullet trains, world class food, Mount Fuji and more - Japan is one of the world's most unique destinations and a trip there will create memories that last a lifetime.

The destination

A striking volcanic island, which is largely made up of peaceful mountains and coastal plains, Japan is a country that is truly one of a kind. During summer, visitors can enjoy hiking, cycling and mountain climbing, whilst in winter the land is covered with snow and ice, making it one of the best places in the world for skiing. Whether you’re looking to find the iconic cherry blossom, or you’re just there to see the sights, a trip to Japan is set to be truly unforgettable.

Whilst the bright lights of Tokyo and the sleek bullet trains give the country its cutting edge and modern feel, Japan is a destination that is steeped in history and culture. Discover ancient temples and shrines in Kyoto, stay in a Ryokan (traditional inn) in one of the country’s hot spring resorts, or visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to reflect on the tragic events of 1945.

If you’re looking to escape the bustling cities and explore the quiet countryside instead, head over to Hakone and check out the onsen (hot springs) for a traditional spa experience in the middle of the Japanese Alps. Hakone is also the gateway to Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain standing tall at over 3700m, and is a sight not to be missed during your visit to the country. If hiking is your thing, don’t miss the Kiso Valley which runs through the mountains of the Central Alps and offers fantastic walking trails as well as traditional post towns to explore too.

Food is a huge part of Japanese culture and has become much more well known in recent years, serving up some of the best dishes in Asia and indeed the entire world. Japanese food markets are a fantastic way to understand more of the country’s culinary style, which has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. From unique street food to Michelin-starred restaurant dishes, Japan serves up a culinary delight no matter what corner of the country you are in.

Not sure when to visit? We think Spring (March – April) is the perfect time to explore Japan, with its cherry blossom in full bloom, gorgeous blue skies aplenty and warm temperatures of around 20-25 degrees. Autumn (October – November) is also a fantastic time to visit, with the trees, plants and flowers turning a wonderful shade of red, and the humidity dropping to make the temperature much more bearable.

A trip to Japan is a truly special travel experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in a totally different culture. Explore ancient landmarks, indulge in traditional Japanese food and get around in style by hopping on the speedy bullet trains. Whatever your reasons for visiting Japan, you’ll be sure to have the holiday of a lifetime and create lasting memories of this very special place.
