What we love
Point Yamu combines three of my favorite things perfectly; healthy and delicious food, fabulous design and a gorgeous spa.
Setting the scene
Opened in December 2013, Point Yamu by COMO is vast and spectacular, perched high on a cliff-top overlooking Phang-Nga Bay on the heavenly east coast of the island.
The urban warehouse style exterior of the hotel is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and once inside, it's clear to see from the elegant, sleek design of the hotel that Point Yamu is unlike any other of its traditional Thai hotel comrades.
A simple palette of blues and whites is used throughout the hotel, giving a sense of continuity and flow - bringing the outdoors, in. It is bright and airy throughout and guests can feel the cool breezes rolling off the hillside. Being elevated on the ridge, there is such a feeling of peace and tranquillity with the magnificent uninterrupted sea views in every direction. .
Point Yamu by COMO has a substantial selection of seventy-nine rooms and suites, and twenty-seven private luxury villas.
The spectacular views across Phang Nga Bay or inland across the Cape are perfectly framed by the floor-to-ceiling windows and whilst most rooms take advantage of this with their terraces, the pool suites and private villas also benefit further with their own private pools.
Most of the villas and suites are one bedroom, but there are several villas available to suit families or larger groups.
Point Yamu Suite has a second seating area that converts into a comfortable sleeping area, easily accommodating up to six people, while the two-bedroom COMO Suites can be also be interconnected with a Bay Room either side to create a family-friendly four-bedroom suite.
The largest villa - the Pool Villa is made up of three bedrooms and sleeps up to eight people. It also features an indoor and outdoor dining, a kitchen, small laundry and further small bedroom/maid's room.
There are two restaurants to choose from when dining at Point Yamu. For fine dining and the ultimate in taste sensation, look no further than Nahmyaa Thai Restaurant. Vibrant red and orange and a gold-leaf feature wall, are the sensual backdrop for the Peranakan-Thai cuisine.
For a more casual affair, located by the pool, guests will find La Sirena Italian Restaurant - a light, sleek room with an inviting pizza-ready wood-burning oven. With indoor and outdoor dining opening out to the pergola, the restaurant serves a mix of modern Mediterranean and seafood, and has breath-taking views across the infinity pool over to Phang Nga Bay. Breakfast is also served here every morning.
After dinner, the guests can retire to the Aqua Bar, for a post-dinner cocktail or two. Situated next to the pool, it's the perfect finish to the evening under the stars, feeling the warm breeze and watching the stunning sea views.
For a little romance - or even large family affairs - the chefs can use their culinary skills to prepare a meal in the hotel's private dining room (which comfortably seats twenty guests), in the guests' residence, or at a secluded spot on a nearby beach.
Shambhala Retreat spa at Point Yamu is the ultimate hideaway in which to recharge the batteries. With its relaxation area, steam rooms and Jacuzzi, the spa features a number of holistic treatments and massages to invigorate the mind, body and soul. Private lessons from a team of professional fitness instructors are available for more one-on-one activities, as well as group Yoga and Pilate's sessions.
With the sun shining all year round, a number of water sports and activities are available for guests, including kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, snorkelling, rock climbing and even a chance for some exhilarating cliff jumping!
For a more sedate option, many guests also take advantage of the island's immaculate golf courses.
For fantastic way to view the island and all its beauty, why not participate in a scenic island cruise, arranged by the hotel. Guests can even have a picnic hamper put together by the staff and stop off at a secluded, romantic spot on the journey.
Outdoors, there is a designated play area and children's swimming pool, whist indoors there is also a Games Room, containing a pool table, darts, table-football and PlayStation.
Point Yamu is located just 25 minutes drive from Phuket International Airport. Upon arriving at the airport, a transfer can be arranged to bring you directly to the hotel.
