What we love
Retiring to your room in the ramparts of an ancient chateau really adds magic to the French experience; and at Chateau St Martin you're just a short drive from all the excitement of the Riviera towns.
Setting the scene
Originally a grand, 12th Century castle draped over the hills running down to the Cote d'Azur, Chateau St Martin has been tastefully transformed into a sumptuous Relais & Chateau hotel providing a wonderfully atmospheric retreat. Intoxicating views down to the Mediterranean Sea combine with no expense spared decor, exemplary service and world-class food to create one of our favourite hotels on the south coast.
The rooms and suites at St Martin preserve period charm and are full of character, built into ramparts, under arches, within towers and across the hillside. Classic Rooms are furnished in traditional style, and have large marble bathrooms and lovely views over the hillside and olive groves. The Junior Suites vary in size and outlook; some overlook the hillside, while others have private terraces where you can enjoy views out to sea. Signature Suites have more living space, with separate bedroom and living areas - some over two levels - and large terraces.
It doesn't get much better than a Michelin starred French restaurant - and Chateau St Martin boasts just that in the form of Le Saint Martin, where Franck Ferigutti oversees culinary creations inspired by the French summer. At Le 180, you can enjoy a daily changing menu of similarly fresh Mediterranean food, including the catch of the day, accompanied by sweeping views over the hills; or alternatively head to l'Oliveraie for grilled meats and fish served with field-fresh salads and home-made fresh herb dressings - all under the shade of the olive trees.
St Martin's pool has a lovely position within the leafy gardens, and there are clay tennis courts and a spa - known as one of the best in Europe. In addition to offering indoor and outdoor treatments, the spa also has a fitness centre and provides yoga and meditation classes. St Martin's location also makes it easy to explore the French Riviera, whether ancient hilltop towns, the art for which the region is known, or the excitement of Cannes, Nice or Monaco. If you like being outdoors, you'll find everything from trekking and mountain biking to yacht charters available to you.
St Martin runs a children's club each afternoon throughout July and August. The programme will be tailored to suit the ages, interests and number of children present, but usually includes cultural and sporting activities, arts and crafts, and outings to explore the local area.
Chateau St Martin is 30 minutes' drive from Nice, 40 minutes from Cannes harbour, and 10 minutes from Monaco by helicopter.
