What we love
If you're looking for villa-style accommodation with all the benefits of a hotel, look no further than Amirandes. Its waterside setting is instantly calming, and we love the private sandy beaches and facilities for the whole family - not least the characterful restaurants.
Setting the scene
Built in the style of the Minoan kings of Knossos, whose ruins lie nearby, Amirandes snakes along the northern coast of Crete, with columned pavilions and low rise bungalows spilling down to the sea. Open spaces and an abundance of water and light create a cool, calm feel; while sleek designer furniture and fine cottons and silks add a touch of luxury.
Amirandes offers rooms, suites, bungalows and villas. Suites offer extra living areas - great if you're travelling with a family and like to spread out a little - while bungalows and villas are larger still, providing more privacy and a home-from-home feel. One of the lovely things about Amirandes is the space - and the bungalows and villas have been designed to make the most of it: many have private gardens, terraces and pools as well as opulent bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs. Views are out to sea or over the gardens, while inside the decor remains neutral, with a few careful injections of colour and texture.
There are no less than eight options at Amirandes. The main restaurant offers Mediterranean buffet in the evenings, while at lunch you should head to Petrino by the beach for mouthwatering seafood and light Greek dishes, or to one of the pool bars. The evening options are even better. Lago Di Candia is the resort's fine dining restaurant, with a tempting international menu and a dreamy setting surrounded by water. Italian is always a winner, and we love Minotaur, as much for its quirky design and fabulous collection of original Picasso ceramics as for its new Italian cusine. Another option is Xasteria, grounded in its Cretan roots and serving up a unique and immersive village-style menu using the freshest organic produce from the island to the sound of authentic music - washed down with local wine of course! If Asia is calling, Blue Monkey is sure to satisfy with its selection of regional favourites given a modern twist. Reservations are recommended, and of course we'd be delighted to make them for you. If you have little ones, Tasty Corners Kids free lunch buffet is a great feature.
The accommodation at Amirandes is great for families, as are the facilities - from the child friendly restaurants and staff to the children's paddling pool, secluded beaches and lawns. On-site shops also stock necessities such as food, nappies and sun cream. There are four children's clubs caring for different age groups, with games, arts and crafts, sports and parties organised for children up to the age of 12, and a more relaxed place for teens.
Amirandes is best reached by car from Heraklion Airport which is 18km away. Heraklion is also the jumping off point if you're travelling by ferry from one of the other Greek islands.
