What we love
No wonder Blue Palace is a Conde Nast Traveller Gold List regular - it has everything you need for a relaxing, rejuvenating holiday, not to mention a very special spot overlooking a sheltered inlet on the Coast of Elounda. We love the sense of space, the fantastic service, and the private beach.
Setting the scene
With uninterrupted views stretching across the sea towards storied Spinalonga, Blue Palace has a privileged spot on its own private beach, near the charming little fishing village of Plaka. Classical Greek architecture in the form of wide terraces, grand archways and pillars creates a wonderful sense of space and security; while earthy tones and low-key decor ensure that Blue Palace blends beautifully with its surroundings.
Generously sized, with luxurious furnishings and indulgent marble bathrooms, the rooms at Blue Palace offer peace and comfort in spades; and as it would be criminal to waste that view, they all have windows and balconies perfectly placed for admiring it. There are a variety of options, meaning something for couples, friends and families. The larger suites have separate living areas and some have outdoor pools which appear to spill into the sea beneath. Two and three bedroomed villas offer yet more space and facilities, with the plush Royal View Villa being the creme de la creme.
Dining at Blue Palace is a real pleasure, whether sampling local favourites or enjoying something a little more familiar. The focal restaurant is Olea, which has a magical setting overlooking Spinalonga island. Olea hosts daily buffet breakfasts as well as serving up Greek and international favourites as the sun goes down each evening. There's lots of choice in addition, too, including a fantastic steak restaurant specialising in the best cuts from the island; a rustic Greek restaurant on the sands; delicious Italian fare at Isola, and various Asian options at Asia Blue - from sushi to Thai curries. There's also a beach barbecue every Wednesday afternoon.
The private beach is peaceful and calming, with various decks for added privacy. The hotel staff will look after you throughout the day, and you can head to the beach bar when you fancy a change of scene or a dip in the pool. A caique (traditional wooden fishing boat) trip is a lovely way to appreciate the coastline's little bays and islands - we recommend going at sunset or heading out with a picnic lunch. Crete has a rich history well worth exploring; we'd be happy to arrange visits to sites such as Spinalonga and The Palace of Knossos, or help with car hire if you'd rather explore by yourself. Blue Palace has its own fitness centre, dive centre and tennis courts, and offers various exercise classes including yoga and aerobics. The watersport possibilities are endless, and the Crete Golf Club is within half an hour's drive if you feel like a round.
Children between three and 12 have the option to join the Kids Club, which provides excellent care and a programme of engaging activities between 9am and 5pm. Children can try their hand at crafts or sports alongside others their own age. In addition to the Club, there are several fun things to do at Blue Palace, from swimming lessons and watersports to bike riding and family-friendly excursions such as horse riding, go-carting, cooking and wildlife spotting.
Blue Palace lies 78km (around an hour) from Heraklion Airport.
