Setting the scene

Tucked away on a rocky cliff in a secluded area of Mallorca, and just over a 30 minute drive from the city of Palma, Cap Rocat is a 19th century former military fortress carefully carved out of sandstone. Originally built as an ancient defence fort to protect Spain from the US, Cap Rocat was never actually used as it was intended to be, and has since been turned into a stunning five star resort offering boutique accommodation at its finest. Listed as a Protected Natural Area, and with an abundance of bird and marine life in the Bay of Palma, your stay at Cap Rocat will be nothing short of spectacular. The same original features of the fortress, including bunkers, trenches and drawbridges, are still present at the hotel today, making it feel like a heritage site rather than a resort. With a full-service spa, two Mediterranean restaurants and open terraces looking out to sea, as well as gardens, tennis courts a sparkling infinity pool and even a private beach, you'll never want to leave the adults-only Cap Rocat.

Sleeping

There 25 soundproofed bedrooms at Cap Rocat, 22 of which are glamorous suites. Some of the rooms boast stunning sea views, whilst others overlook the mountains and Palma bay instead. The Double Fortaleza and Suite Cap Rocat rooms have their own private terrace and patios. Suite El Cabo, Suite Del Mar and the Sentinels Suites feature private swimming pools, Mediterranean gardens and large terraces with comfy hammocks. Most of the suites are carved into the rock, with vaulted ceilings, original stone walls and enormous windows letting in plenty of light. Some of the suites have terraces that are on split levels, giving you plenty of outdoor space to enjoy, as well as breathtaking sea views over the Bay of Palma below.

Eating

Cap Rocat has two restaurants and poolside bars where you can gaze across to the ocean whilst sipping champagne. La Fortaleza, the main restaurant, is located on one of the pavilions and serves up exquisite Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine for some fantastic alfresco dining during the summer months. For a less formal dining experience, eat at The Sea Club, an open air restaurant offering dishes cooked in an authentic Mallorcan firewood oven and grill, located in the Queen's Cove, right on the seafront. The hotel's 24 hour room service menu includes dishes from the Sea Club menu as well as a range of hot and cold snacks to choose from. Complimentary breakfast is offered to all guests every morning, and can either be eaten in one of the restaurants or ordered directly to your room, delivered in a picnic hamper and set up at your private table. The former kitchen of the fortress has been refurbished in beautiful Mallorcan style and is now used for cookery classes, wine tasting and private dining, with Cap Rocat's chef Victor Garcia providing an expert insight into the world of Mediterranean gastronomy.

Doing

The most sheltered part of the fortress carved deep out of the rock, Cap Rocat's full service spa offers the perfect place from which to relax and refresh. The saltwater swimming pool is bathed in natural light, despite being 12 metres below the ground, allowing you to feel the warmth of the sun on your face as you swim. There's also a Hammam and sauna with treatment rooms offering hot stone and sports massages, aromatherapy, facials and body treatments. Tennis courts and a gym allow you to keep fit whilst on your holiday, with Yoga, Pilates and personal training sessions available on request. The outdoor infinity pool is the perfect place to do some swimming, with comfortable white leather sun-loungers waiting for you to relax on afterwards.

Head to Cap Rocat's private sandy beach with direct sea access to do some proper sunbathing, or head up to the rooftop terrace for panoramic views of the Bay of Palma below. The hotel provides complimentary snorkelling equipment to discover the marine life in the sea directly opposite, as well as mountain bikes if you prefer to explore by road instead. If you fancy venturing further afield, your 24/7 concierge can assist with organising nearby mountain biking, snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking as well as boat tours around the rest of beautiful Mallorca. The vibrant city of Palma, the island's capital, is located just over half an hour's drive away with fantastic shopping, ancient landmarks and lively nightlife to enjoy.
