Looking for that perfect romantic hideaway? Or some serious time for R&R in a tranquil oasis? Or you might be trying to find that ideal spot to spoil the bride to be on that all important hen weekend. We have the answer to all your prayers….Chewton Glen.
Chewton Glen is a quintessentially English, privately owned, luxury Country House Hotel & Spa on the fringe of the New Forest in Hampshire that truly oozes charm and elegance. When we, the Oxford Private Travel team, arrived at the beautiful estate ready to experience many of the hotel’s award-winning facilities we were all blown away by the warmest of welcomes we received from the friendly and attentive nature of all the staff. As soon as you stride through the cute courtyard entrance to the hotel you immediately begin to take on the calming and relaxing atmosphere that is plentiful at Chewton Glen.
With a simple team agenda of treatments booked in at the spa and an evening of wining and dining ahead of us we first had the pleasure of being introduced to our beautiful rooms. One of the benefits at Chewton Glen is there is a style and size of room that would suit everyone as every room is completely unique. For example there is a mix of layouts for those that prefer a separate living room space, to those that prefer doors that open out to the acres of land, or for those that need to accommodate their children. Additionally, differences are also in the look and feel of the rooms – so you can choose if you prefer a traditional classic décor or a modern minimalist style. We had the pleasure of their Croquet Lawn Rooms that all gaze out to the perfectly manicured croquet lawns. Every detail had been thought through, from the comfort of the room with the vast comfy king size bed where you felt like you melted into the sheets; to the huge bath and double, yes double walk-in shower! The little extras they prepared in the room were beautiful touches, from the pre-stamped postcard in the room (so you could send a ‘wish you were here’ message!), to the iced bottle of champagne on arrival to toast your stay, to the collection of travel magazines for browsing in the rooms, all defined the attention of detail that makes a stay at Chewton Glen extra special.
The spa really was a sight to see with one of the largest hydrotherapy spa pools in Europe. There was so much on offer from the aromatherapy saunas and steam rooms, the 17m swimming pool, a nail studio (ideal for enjoying treatments altogether) and 12 individual treatment rooms for you to choose from the array of treatments and holistic therapies. Care was taken by our therapists to ensure everyone had chosen the perfect treatment for them with different members of the team having never experienced a massage to another being pregnant. Everyone left on cloud 9, as we floated out of the spa back to our rooms ready to get ready for dinner!
With an afternoon of rejuvenation, much needed pampering, and a chance for a quick spruce up the team were then welcomed by Champagne in the hotel’s sophisticated bar – a chance to peruse the mouth watering dining menu and talk through the food options and your requirements with the attentive staff. The dishes varied from typical English fine dining to tastes and flavours from all over the world, but emphasis was made on locally sourcing ingredients with much fruit, vegetables and herbs grown in Chewton Glen’s very own ‘Kitchen Garden’.
The culinary experience at Chewton Glen is second to none from the a la carte breakfast overlooking the gardens, to the picture perfect traditional afternoon tea that can be served in many of the quiet cosy sitting areas in this spacious hotel or indeed as room service on your own private terrace.
Food is clearly of major importance to Chewton Glen and it’s clients and this shines through from the delicious, beautiful dishes that are served all day. It was great to hear about different opportunities Chewton Glen offers to their clients including cooking with James Martin! What a truly unique experience for an foodie or wannabe chef to learn from the best! And to top it off you get to eat the amazing dishes after the cookery class as well.
Wanting to highlight our favourite experiences and touches that Chewton Glen has to offer we put together a little team top 5:
1. Good Morning Blue Sky…time for a hot tub dip! What better way to start the day than a refreshing plunge in the outdoor hot tub. It comes highly recommended even in February!
2. Signalling outdoor pleasures is the array of Hunter wellies lined up in the porch of the hotel. Pop on a pair and take the gentle stroll down to the beach only 10 minutes away through the stunning grounds.
3. Sipping that warming aperitif by the cosy roaring fire in the hotel’s sumptuous bar
4. The concierge service go the extra mile by far – When forgetting the all important swimwear to experience the amazing spa, nothing was too much for the concierge team as they hit the shops to bring back some.
5. Touring the beautiful estate we were all blown away by unique concept of spending the night in their uber cool Chewton Glen Treehouses. Contemporary design, with luxury and nature at the heart with forest views from a canopy! We’re all ready to rebook!
