It's that time of year – when many of us find ourselves dreaming of ditching our woolly jumpers and fleeing to far away places to sip on heavenly cocktails and relax on sun kissed beaches.
The Caribbean is often the top of OSPT’s list of our favourite Winter Sun destinations - but it can be tricky to decide which Caribbean island appeals the most!
We have compiled our list of favourite islands to help you decide on which one could be your perfect winter escape.
Barbados has a universal appeal – fabulous beaches and lush tropical hillsides, nightlife, fantastic restaurants and some of the best hotels, resorts and luxury villas in the world. Many visitors to the island make the most of world-class golf, cricket and polo facilities, but it is the genuine warmth and friendliness of the Bajan people that really makes Barbados somewhere that attracts a very high number of return visitors.
This is an island where you do as little or as much as you’d like – equally you can be as laid back or as glamorous as you wish! From local beach bars to glamorous restaurants, and a huge variety of activities for those who don’t want to spend their whole holiday under a palm tree, we love Antigua for its universal appeal, Caribbean vibe and warm welcome.
As the third biggest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica’s size means that it offers a huge variety of landscapes and activities – to say nothing of the amount of beaches, towns and resorts to choose from. From sugar-white sandy beaches and clear, warm waters, a 7,000 ft mountain ridge complete with rivers and waterfalls and lush, green rainforest in the island interior, Jamaica is an island of contrasts and diversity.
British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands offer some of the most beautiful, unspoilt landscapes and beaches in the world, along with a variety of luxury accommodation, from world-class private islands and luxury resorts to a fabulous selection of privately-owned luxury villas that offer a sumptuous home-from-home experience with excellent service to match.
Anguilla has wonderful powdery white beaches that seem to stretch forever. It is relatively undeveloped and is a great choice for those returning to the Caribbean and looking for something a bit different. Anguilla is also a total foodie heaven and boasts an impressive collection of fine dining restaurants. Calypso music sets the mood here and we cant think of a more romantic getaway than on an island with the aptly-named Rendezvous Beach.
Turks & Caicos
The powdery white-sand beaches of Providenciales — the jewel of the Turks & Caicos — are the stuff of postcards and dreams. The beaches along the north shore of the island near Grace Bay often rank among the best in the world.
Chic, glamorous and naturally very beautiful, St Barths is a little slice of France in the middle of the Caribbean, offering a unique combination of high-end allure and Caribbean charm. From your exciting descent into the airport at Gustavia, St Barths offers something really very special, and as well as exceptional beaches, designer shopping and an array of incredible restaurants and bars, the luxury villas here are amongst the best in the world.
The Grenadines are a collection of 32 stunning islands that include; Mustique, Canouan and Bequia - to name a few. If you are looking to unwind then the peace and tranquillity of these beautiful islands will have you barefoot and feeling relaxed within seconds of stepping of the plane.
St. Lucia's two towering volcanic plugs (aka, pitons) rise dramatically above black-sand beaches. Add in rainforests and this is one visually spectacular island. The dramatic landscape along with plentiful all-inclusive resorts makes St. Lucia a top-ranked honeymoon destination. Visitors can spend their days relaxing on a beach, hiking rainforest trails, snorkelling and diving or visiting the world's only "drive-in" volcano.
French St Martin is less developed and offers a totally different experience to its Dutch neighbour. With pristine beaches and beautiful scenery it provides a tranquil and relaxing break. It is ideal for couples, or those just looking to get away from it all. There is also an extremely good selection of luxury villas available, as opposed to hotel accommodation.
